The Unorthodox - הבלתי רשמיים

Scottish Premiere: Thur 09/5 at 20:30, Everyman, Glasgow.

Ya’akov, a Sepharadic Jew who's daughter is expelled from school for ethnic reasons, along with two friends improvises a campaign – without means, connections or money, but with a lot of rage, passion and a sense of justice. The story behind the early days of "Shas" party.

“The Unorthodox is a dramatic underdog story, filled with comic moments, about the founding of the Shas Party in Jerusalem in the early 1980s…. although it may start out like one of those feel-good stories of a little guy beating the odds, it turns into a tragedy, not one littered with bodies, but one where people’s souls are stolen or sold.”
Hannah Brown, The Jerusalem Post

Revolving around Ya’akov Cohen, a printer, who was a key player in the early days of the Shas party, but his since been pretty much forgotten, the film shows how the party was created to champion the rights, 35 years ago, of a Mizrahi and Sephardic ‘underclass’, to run the Jerusalem municipality.

It was the last straw for Ya’akov when his daughter is expelled from school for ethnic reasons, and he and two friends improvised a campaign – no means, no connections, no money, but with a lot of rage, passion and a sense of justice.
